ACEC-BC Position Paper

Climate Change and the Standard of Care

ACEC-BC is pleased to release this position paper, supporting members and their clients to understand and manage the evolving standard of care with respect to climate resilience and adaptation. Developed by members with engineering, insurance, and legal expertise, the paper addresses risks and mitigation strategies.

Why did we create the position paper?

The rapidly changing climate is introducing risk to planning and infrastructure design, delivery, and maintenance. Climate change is also challenging our organizations, introducing new and unknown risks associated with a standard of care that may be evolving faster than governing codes and standards. The ACEC-BC Board initiated review and creation of this resource to raise awareness of certain risks and support members to communicate with their clients.

How was the position paper developed?

The position paper was initiated by the Board and developed by a select committee of members who practice engineering and law, as well as insurance professionals. The paper is intended to provide high-level support, and members are always encouraged to engage with their own legal and insurance representatives to develop processes that align with their organization’s risk appetite and controls.
