2025 ACEC-BC Awards for Engineering Excellence

Information on Judging and Evaluation

Projects are evaluated by a jury consisting of engineering professionals and construction and design partners. The jury includes up to 20 members and collaborates to choose the category award recipients and the annual Lieutenant Governor’s Award winner.

Listed below are the key factors the jury will consider during the evaluation process. While not all elements are mandatory, we encourage participants to present their projects with a balanced approach, highlighting technical details and explaining how their project addressed some of the following aspects. In your submission, consider the overall story including the five W’s (Who, What, Why, When, Where) assisting the jury in evaluating these key factors.

Technical

  • Technical Excellence and Innovation: Quality of engineering and design, including creative and innovative solutions.
  • Challenges Overcome: Solutions to significant obstacles encountered during the project.
  • Future Trends: Forward-thinking approaches that enhance the project.
  • Engagement in Design and Construction: Depth of collaboration with key stakeholders during the project’s design and construction phases.
  • Collaboration: Innovative approaches to working with partners, clients, and communities that contributed to project success.

Environmental

  • Positive Lasting Environmental Impact: The project’s approach to sustainability, resource conservation, and long-term environmental benefits.
  • Climate Change: Efforts to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and adapt to climate-related challenges.

Social

  • Contribution to the Community: Positive social, cultural, and economic impact on the local community.
  • Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Demonstration of practices that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.
  • Indigenous Relations: Engagement with Indigenous communities, respecting Indigenous knowledge, and promoting reconciliation.

Eligibility
  • All ACEC-BC members (in good standing) are encouraged and eligible for entry into the awards competition.
  • Joint submissions involving non-ACEC-BC members are acceptable only if an ACEC-BC member performed more than 50% of the engineering work (for the submitted component).
  • Members may submit a maximum of two entries in any one category, and a maximum of one entry in each of the other categories.
Project Specific Rules
  • Date: Projects where the design and construction elements were completed between January 2024 – January 2025 are eligible.
  • Location: Only projects managed and largely engineered in a BC office are eligible.
  • Client Approval: Client confirmation of dates and approval to submit will be required during submission. Submissions under the Projects Under $2.5 Million category will require verification from the project owner on the total project construction costs.
  • Entry Fee: $1350+ GST per project entry. To support members to celebrate with their clients, each entry includes 4 tickets to the Gala.
  • NEW FOR 2025:
    • The Transportation & Bridges category has now been split into two:
      • 🚝 Transportation: Engineering related to transportation projects including roads, rail, tunnels, airports, transit systems, ports and marine engineering.
      • 🌉 Bridges: Engineering related to the design, construction, or rehabilitation of bridges.
    • We've developed a template for the client/owner permission letter. Simply share the template with the project owner and ask they insert it into their letterhead and sign.

Please include a one page letter from the owner of the project giving permission to enter the project into the competition and certifying that the design and construction (or the assignment) was largely completed between January 2024-2025. See link to template below!

If you were not the prime, please include a one page letter from the prime or main consultant on the project giving permission to enter the project into the competition and verifying the role played by the submitting firm (not required if either the owner or the submitting firm is the prime/main consultant).

Part 4: Additional Information

Additional Information (optional)

In addition to content included in Part 3, you may also include a PDF summary package with additional detail. This is limited to a total of 5 pages:

Pages 1-4:
  • Additional info / Summary: this may highlight: project objectives, solutions, achievements, technical excellence, innovation, and important aspects of the project for example sustainability, equity, aesthetics, economic, etc.
  • Page size 8.5x11, minimum font size 12
  • This document may include graphics (photos, tables, etc.) that illustrate the important aspects of the project
Page 5:
  • One drawing easily viewed on a monitor (something that would be legible if printed on 11 x 17 paper).
