ACEC-BC Position Paper

Standard Form Agreements

Note: This is an update to the original released in June 2010.

The ACEC-BC Business Practices Committee supports member understanding of contracts and other common practices through publication of Position Papers.

What is a Standard Form Agreement?

Standard Form Agreements are contracts available for use by consultants and their clients that are considered reasonable for both parties. The contracts use clear language that is risk balanced and aligned with wise practice for consulting engineering assignments. Use of Standard Form Agreements supports trust, efficiency, and transparency for project partners. The agreements highlighted in this position paper are all collaboratively developed by project partners including design consultants, contractors, and clients (infrastructure owners).

Why we updated this Position Paper

Over time Standard Form Agreements evolve to account for changes in how partners work together, including the technology utilised for delivering a project, and other common business practices. Occasionally, regulatory or legal conditions may evolve. This Position Paper comes after significant updates to two benchmark agreements: CCDC 31 – 2020 and the MMCD Client/Consultant Agreement (2024).
