Get Started Guide

Indigenous Relations Action Plan

The ACEC-BC Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee is pleased to release its latest resource: Get Started Guide: Indigenous Relations Action Plan!

Why did the committee create the guide?

As engineering professionals, our work has a profound impact on the communities we serve. It’s essential to approach projects with understanding and respect for Indigenous Peoples, their territories, and their histories.

Meaningful engagement and consultation with Indigenous communities are built on the principles of trust and respect. These principles are not just abstract ideals; they require thoughtful, informed approaches and an acknowledgment of the historical and ongoing harms experienced by Indigenous Peoples in BC and across Canada.

The Get Started Guide was developed to help members advance reconciliation on projects through a framework that guides an organization’s approach to engagement and consultation.

How was the guide developed?

The Get Started Guide is a refresh of a resource ACEC-BC first developed in 2018. In re-developing this guide, the committee drew on their own knowledge, training and resources as well as the insights and expertise of ACEC-BC members working in Indigenous relations roles.
