Within the presentation diversity data within the profession of engineering will be reviewed\, providing attendees with a better understanding of where we are today and highlighting the importance of equity\, diversity\, and inclusion within our industry. Building upon the understanding of where we are currently\, the presentation will focus on inclusive leadership actions that young professionals can take to create more inclusive workplaces and environments. In 2019\, Marcie received the Chancellor’s Award for highest academic excellence from the Royal Roads School of Business and was nominated for the Governor General’s Gold Medal for Top Masters Level Student Thesis (2018) for her research on the retention of women in engineering. Her research\, in combination with her technical and leadership experience\, has led her to now work in roles that support engineering section organizations with equity\, diversity\, and inclusion initiatives. Marcie is passionate about leading others to take action and catalyzing change to improve diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.

By approaching this phase proactively\, Engineering and Architecture firms can exercise greater control over the interpretation of the final design\, address questions and problems as they arise\, and support the client’s objectives more effectively. But anyone who has been involved in construction phase services knows the process also has plenty of traps for the unwary—traps that can leave firms open to a professional liability claim. \nThis discussion includes an overview of AXA XL’s Risk Drivers research\, highlighting how many factors are linked or related to CA services. We will review the purpose and importance of CA services\, typical CA activities and best practices in each of these areas. Many young professionals are already involved in stakeholder engagement\, and most will be involved in some capacity as their careers advance. This presentation will explore engineers’ roles in stakeholder engagement\, present real-world project case studies\, and provide takeaways for young professionals to advance their skills in this practice area. \nCost: \n\nACEC-BC Member: $10\nNon-member: $25\n\nFormat: Zoom \nAbout the Speaker \nGeoff Freer\, CEO\, Firth Group \nGeoff Freer has more than 30 years of diverse leadership and project management experience across a number of public and private sectors in Canada\, including transportation\, mining and minerals\, forestry\, environment\, land use and adventure tourism. As a former Province of BC executive\, Geoff was known as a problem solver and leader in supporting communities\, the private sector and local governments across the Province. Geoff currently leads a consulting firm\, Firth Group\, managing the planning\, approvals\, development and implementation of large infrastructure projects. Some of his most critical files were serving as Vice President of Venue Construction for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games\, Senior Advisor on the Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project and Project Director for the rehabilitation of the Lions Gate Bridge\, the South Fraser Perimeter Road and developing the proposed George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

SUMMARY:Making Big Career Decisions and Learning From Failures
DESCRIPTION:Three or four panelists will give short presentations about their careers. A discussion will follow in which the panelists explore how to make big decisions and learning from failures. We will discuss times when each panel member has had to make a "Big Decision" in their career\, and how they evaluated their options. We will open the floor to questions from the audience for an interactive conversation. Lastly\, students will be divided into smaller discussion groups where they can network with young professionals. \nAbout the Speakers: \nArma Dhaliwal\, M.Eng.\, P.Eng\nArma Dhaliwal is a senior Pavements and Geotechnical Engineer with Tetra Tech. She graduated from UBC in 2007 and immediately started working for Tetra Tech. Her experience and interests are in transportation and infrastructure projects. She has worked in both of Tetra Tech’s Geotechnical and Pavements Groups and is now part of the Asset Management Group. While in the Geotechnical group she worked on transit\, utility and industrial energy projects. As part of the pavements and asset management groups she has been involved in projects that ranged in size from shopping center parking lots to provincial and interstate P3 projects with up to 30 year operation periods. \nAlex Wigle\, P.Eng\nAlex Wigle joined Hatch in June 2015 after completing his Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Alex works in Hatch’s metals sector with the High Pressure Metallurgy multidisciplinary team designing autoclave gold processing facilities to sustainably process refractory gold ore. He is currently working on the Amursk POX Hub Expansion project located in far eastern Russia where the world’s largest pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave was installed. Alex has also worked on gold projects in Colorado\, Chile and Papua New Guinea. \nPhilip Riessner\, P.Eng.\nPhilip Riessner graduated from the UBC Mechanical Engineering program in 2015\, and was hired out of school by PETRONAS Energy Canada Ltd. He completed a rotational EIT program with PETRONAS\, where he gained exposure to field operations\, asset integrity\, and production engineering. He have since assumed the position of Water Management Engineer\, where he oversee the sourcing and recycling of water in support of oil and gas development. \nThis is a virtual event and will take place over Zoom. \nWe are looking for young professionals to network with UBC students and help to answer their questions after the presentation. This is a 1.5-hour time commitment; the first hour will be listening to the presentations and panel discussion\, and the following half-hour will include actively discussing the topic\, networking with students and answering questions they may have about your own career.
