SUMMARY:Making Big Career Decisions and Learning From Failures
DESCRIPTION:Three or four panelists will give short presentations about their careers. A discussion will follow in which the panelists explore how to make big decisions and learning from failures. We will discuss times when each panel member has had to make a "Big Decision" in their career\, and how they evaluated their options. We will open the floor to questions from the audience for an interactive conversation. Lastly\, students will be divided into smaller discussion groups where they can network with young professionals. \nAbout the Speakers: \nArma Dhaliwal\, M.Eng.\, P.Eng\nArma Dhaliwal is a senior Pavements and Geotechnical Engineer with Tetra Tech. She graduated from UBC in 2007 and immediately started working for Tetra Tech. Her experience and interests are in transportation and infrastructure projects. She has worked in both of Tetra Tech’s Geotechnical and Pavements Groups and is now part of the Asset Management Group. While in the Geotechnical group she worked on transit\, utility and industrial energy projects. As part of the pavements and asset management groups she has been involved in projects that ranged in size from shopping center parking lots to provincial and interstate P3 projects with up to 30 year operation periods. \nAlex Wigle\, P.Eng\nAlex Wigle joined Hatch in June 2015 after completing his Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Alex works in Hatch’s metals sector with the High Pressure Metallurgy multidisciplinary team designing autoclave gold processing facilities to sustainably process refractory gold ore. He is currently working on the Amursk POX Hub Expansion project located in far eastern Russia where the world’s largest pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave was installed. Alex has also worked on gold projects in Colorado\, Chile and Papua New Guinea. \nPhilip Riessner\, P.Eng.\nPhilip Riessner graduated from the UBC Mechanical Engineering program in 2015\, and was hired out of school by PETRONAS Energy Canada Ltd. He completed a rotational EIT program with PETRONAS\, where he gained exposure to field operations\, asset integrity\, and production engineering. He have since assumed the position of Water Management Engineer\, where he oversee the sourcing and recycling of water in support of oil and gas development. \nThis is a virtual event and will take place over Zoom. \nWe are looking for young professionals to network with UBC students and help to answer their questions after the presentation. This is a 1.5-hour time commitment; the first hour will be listening to the presentations and panel discussion\, and the following half-hour will include actively discussing the topic\, networking with students and answering questions they may have about your own career. As a settler and Canadian-born Chinese\, she strives to understand her role in reconciliation and to be an accomplice to those who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial.\n \nKathleen Corey\, City of Vancouver  \nKathleen is an urban designer and transportation engineer who designs streets for people\, shaping the experience on foot\, by bike\, and in transit by carving out pathways for gathering\, movement\, and growth.\n \n \nKathleen’s work at the City of Vancouver includes managing the parklet\, pavement-to-plaza\, and pilot curbside patio programs and\, more recently in response to COVID-19\, leading design for over a dozen quick-build projects within the roadway to increase space for physical distancing.\n \n \nCrossing disciplinary boundaries with degrees in landscape architecture and civil engineering\, Kathleen is inspired by tactical urbanism and transformative design efforts to address Vision Zero and the climate emergency.\n \nSarah Ross\, TransLink  \nSarah Ross brings a wealth of experience to her role as Director of System Planning at TransLink\, the regional transportation authority that moves nearly 500\,000 people on transit across Metro Vancouver every day. Sarah’s passion for city’s where all people have sustainable access to live full lives has driven her work as a planner. With degrees in Sociology and Planning from McGill University\, University of Toronto\, and University of British Columbia\, she joined TransLink in 2004. She became the organization’s Director of System Planning in 2016. As a leader\, Sarah oversees a wide range of issues and areas\, including transit network and bus priority planning\, planning for accessibility\, planning for regional cycling\, walking\, and road programs\, as well as advancing integrated land use and transportation through collaborations with municipalities.  \nShefaly Gunjal\, Canadian Equality Consulting  \nShefaly is a passionate and detail-oriented diversity\, equity and inclusion and social impact consultant and researcher. Her work focuses primarily on examining\, understanding and addressing the barriers and challenges faced by Black\, Indigenous and Women of Colour in the workplace. With a strong academic background in sustainability business management and diversity\, equity and inclusion\, Shefaly has developed a keen eye for solving deeply rooted issues when it comes to promoting and implementing diversity\, equity and inclusion within organizations.    \nWhile conducting research in the diversity\, equity and inclusion space and working as an associate consultant at Canadian Equality\, Shefaly is well versed in social impact reporting\, particularly in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals. She has extensive experience working with various UN organizations\, most recently including the UN Global Compact Network Canada where she worked on their Gender Equality Leadership in the Canadian Private Sector project.   \nShefaly holds an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Management and will complete a Master of Science in Sustainability Management at the University of Toronto this March.

He has since lived in and visited parts of five different continents. He currently lives in Vancouver. In his formal education has learnt about water resources management\, geotechnical engineering\, the performance of geosynthetic liners in containment facilities\, among many other things\, but he got real engineering training at work through lab work\, fieldwork\, design exercises\, and project management experiences. He is passionate about educating young engineers\, volunteering\, and being out in nature for hiking\, biking\, kayaking etc. \nSamantha Taylor\, P.Eng – Geological Engineer at Hatch \nSam Taylor is a geological engineer (Queen’s University) with over six years of experience in the Dynamic Earth Solutions Practice at Hatch. She has worked in the geotechnical group in both the Niagara Falls and Vancouver offices and spent a lot of time on-site in the early years of her career. She acted as the lead geologist at the Keeyask Generation Station in Manitoba\, worked as a dam construction monitor at a major hydropower project in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and led and supported in a Quality Assurance/Quality Control role at a mine in northern Ontario. Sam has notable experience in dam safety\, geotechnical investigation programs\, and instrumentation and monitoring program\, design and is currently developing her rock mechanics skills. Sam calls the Rockies home\, loves to scramble\, and started her rock collection at an early age\, so her career path was no surprise! \nPia Abercromby\, P.Eng – Bridge Engineer at McElhanney \nPia Abercromby studied at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where she spent the first five years of her career designing large civil structures. Since moving to Vancouver in 2015\, she has been working as a Bridge Engineer at McElhanney. She has been involved in the design of bridges from 8 m long to 800 m long and has gained her professional engineering designation. When not at work\, Pia can be found in the wilderness skiing\, rock climbing\, hiking or trail running (or at the moment\, running around Vancouver). \n

This soft skill event demonstrates the need for interdisciplinary coordination and collaboration through our presenter’s experience in the building industry. The discussion is not aimed at technical knowhow but rather the key principals for all engineering disciplines to grasp the “big picture” of interdisciplinary projects. Scott’s passion and enthusiasm for sustainable built environments is evident as he strives to incorporate resilient and regenerative design strategies in all of his projects. SUMMARY:Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 9 for a two-hour interactive workshop on GBA+!\n\n\n\nGender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) is an analytical tool created by the Government of Canada to determine the impacts of our work on diverse groups of people. GBA+ takes an intersectional approach and includes the examination of sex\, gender\, Indigeneity\, race\, ethnicity\, ability\, age\, language\, culture\, geographic location\, etc. on your work. This two-hour interactive workshop will provide participants with a solid understanding of GBA+ and how to apply it effectively to engineering and infrastructure projects. \nParticipants in this workshop will be given a pre-course self-assessment questionnaire to consider individual biases and to prepare for the workshop.  During the workshop\, learning will be reinforced through interactive discussions\, group work\, and short videos while incorporating examples throughout.   \nFollowing the workshop\, participants will also have access to six months of complimentary coaching.  This coaching includes assistance in the implementation of GBA+\, providing advice and reviewing materials\, as well as responding to questions and supplying further research and resources as needed. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nUnderstanding of what GBA+ is as well as the history of GBA+\nExplore the topics of diversity\, identity\, and intersectionality\, as they relate to GBA+\nLearn about the steps and process involved to complete a GBA+ analysis\nReview examples and a case study to practice applying GBA+\n\nCost: \n\nACEC-BC Member: $125\nNon-member: $200\n\nFormat: Zoom Meeting \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitators\nMarcie Hawranik\n \nMarcie Hawranik is the recipient of the 2018 Alberta Premier’s Award of Excellence for her work to advance gender equality in Alberta. In 2019 she was recognized as a SHE Innovator by UN Women.\n \n She is an internationally recognized gender expert with a B.A. Hons. in Political Studies and a Master’s degree in International Relations focused on negotiation and conflict resolution. Her areas of expertise include gender equity\, GBA+\, diversity and inclusion\, conflict resolution\, public relations and communications\, leadership development\, stakeholder engagement\, policy\, program and strategy design\, development and implementation.\n \nMarcie has presented at local and national conferences on GBA+\, unconscious bias and other equity and inclusion tools. She has also presented on best practices to roll out GBA+ initiatives in large organizations to secure support to fuel their success.\n \nIvana Lochhead\n \n Ivana is a motivated\, data-driven diversity\, equity\, and inclusion consultant with a passion for supporting organizations that are courageous and intentional in their pursuit of social justice. She has 8+ years of initiating and delivering sustained results and effective change for organizations of all sizes and across various sectors. She believes that practicing empathy\, understanding privilege\, and embracing conflict in a vulnerable way are the critical gateways to learning to value\, engage with\, and understand differences\, and to building organizations that are unshakeable in their foundation.\n \nIvana holds a BA in Economics from the University of Toronto and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business (Toronto) and IE Business School (Madrid).

SUMMARY:Effective Leadership: Examining Return to Office Through an Inclusion Lens
DESCRIPTION:A two-part series on challenges of a hybrid work environment and examine approaches to consider as part of an inclusive return to office.\n\n\n\nJust when teams\, managers\, and leaders may be getting comfortable with how to work effectively while remoted\, they will have to adapt their approaches yet again. With organizations at varying stages of returning to the office\, a hybrid model where some team members are in office and other are remote presents new and different challenges. The result is a hybrid work environment that present unique challenges with respect to inclusion. \nThe June 2020 ACEC-BC member survey found that inclusion was a key theme and that planning for and addressing barriers will be necessary to developing and delivering successful return to office plans. \nIn this two-part webinar series on Effective Leadership: Examining Return to Office Through an Inclusion Lens\, guest speakers Marcie Cochrane and Sharon Batchelor will discuss the challenges of a hybrid work environment and examine approaches to consider as part of an inclusive return to office plan. \nClick here to register!
