He has had a 22-year career as a consulting civil engineer\, during which he has collaborated with six different firms\, three municipalities\, and a private utility. Though all this\, his focus has been consistent—land development for housing and infrastructure. James has taught both accredited term and short courses\, inspiring and guiding others towards a rewarding career in civil engineering. James has contributed to projects across the country and throughout the province\, with a particular fondness for the impact his work has had in the Okanagan. His commitment to service extends beyond his professional capacity\, as he has been actively involved in association boards and finds great satisfaction in giving back to the community. James first became involved with ACEC-BC in 2005 and has since held various positions within the organization\, including serving on the ACEC-BC YPG\, Board\, and the Okanagan Organizing Committee. Ruby’s leadership forges mutually successful relationships with Indigenous communities and Industry thereby utilizing best practices to successful Indigenous engagement and relationship building. This discussion will cover the basics of working with Indigenous Peoples and their communities. Examples will be used to show the rapidly changing environment of Indigenous inclusion.  \nThis new era of reconciliation requires new generations of engineers to be allies and provide support to projects that enable inclusion\, not stifle it. \nGuest Speaker: Kear Porttris\, Director of Indigenous Relations\, QM Environmental  \nPD Hours: 1 hour \nCost: ACEC-BC member: $10 | Non member: $25 \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\nKear Porttris is the Director of Indigenous Relations for QM Environmental\, a leading environmental and industrial services company. Previous to joining QM\, Kear has worked in consulting\, the public sector\, and academia. Kear is Métis/Chinese\, born and raised in the Canadian Prairies. His family was very involved with both of these communities and these connections remain important to him today. He is passionate about seeing Indigenous Peoples’ inclusion in all industries\, at all levels; he sees himself as much as an advocate as professional and supports multiple initiatives across the region and Canada. A graduate of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Victoria\, Kear completed a Master’s degree focused on Aboriginal Housing and Community Energy Use. Although he has a technical background\, he excels at connecting technical professionals with local Indigenous resources to achieve the goals of a project in collaborative and exciting ways.
