After earning her B.A.Sc in Civil Engineering from UBC\, where she researched sustainable transport safety\, she joined Emil Anderson Construction in 2018 as a Project Coordinator. She quickly advanced to Project Superintendent in 2022 and Project Manager in 2024\, contributing to major heavy civil projects across British Columbia. Her work includes the Highway 5 Flood Recovery\, the award-winning Illecillewaet Four-Laning Project\, and the Highway 3 Bridge Replacement. She is currently managing a Trans-Canada Highway expansion near Revelstoke\, set for completion in 2027. \n  \nJames Kay \nPrincipal\, Specialist Engineer\, Alpine Engineering \nJames Kay is a Professional Engineer and Consulting Civil Engineer who moved to the Okanagan in 2011 with his wife Julie and children Ashley and Hunter. James has enjoyed a varied work career of private consulting firms\, municipal government\, and private utilities. ACEC was a huge part of his career\, as part of the inaugural YPG\, and serving on the Board of Directors. \n  \nKaren Sutherland \nWater / Wastewater Engineer\, McElhanney \nKaren is an experienced Senior Water & Wastewater Engineer and Project Manager with over 30 years of experience actively working on water / wastewater treatment projects. Karen has led projects through all capital delivery phases: concept design\, preliminary design\, detailed engineering\, construction\, inspection\, commissioning and operator training and administration. Full-time resident engineering work has included 6 months in Germany\, 4 months in northern Manitoba and 15 months in Ft McMurray. \n  \nBrad DeShane\nOperations Manager\, Emil Anderson Construction \nBrad started in the construction industry with Emil Anderson Construction as an engineering summer student in 2011 and worked his way up to his current role as Operations Manager. Throughout his career\, he has worked on various projects ranging in size from less than a million dollars on small civil works to over $1 billion on large Hydro Electric Projects. He is a P.Geo. (Non-Practising) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC. \n \nAaron Coelho\nClimate Change & Water Resources Specialist\, Urban Systems \nAaron Coelho is a climate change specialist with a focus on community vulnerability / risk assessments and resiliency planning. Aaron’s strength lies in his ability to navigate the complex and sensitive nature of climate change and work directly with communities and stakeholders to develop adaptation plans. Many of Aaron’s projects involve both natural and built infrastructure and understanding how climate change will impact the interacting systems. The risk management process involves thorough planning to create a risk management plan that allows project managers to identify\, monitor and mitigate risks as they arise.  \nThis event explores construction risk management principles and examples from our guest’s experience in over 20 years of past projects. In order for professionals and teams to do their best work\, they need to feel a sense of belonging\, emphasizing the necessity of inclusive environments. \nThis presentation will provide young professionals with actions that individuals can take to create more inclusive environments.  Within the presentation diversity data within the profession of engineering will be reviewed\, providing attendees with a better understanding of where we are today and highlighting the importance of equity\, diversity\, and inclusion within our industry. Building upon the understanding of where we are currently\, the presentation will focus on inclusive leadership actions that young professionals can take to create more inclusive workplaces and environments. The goal of this presentation is to empower young professionals to enact positive change within their present sphere of influence and as future leaders in the industry. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker \nMarcie Cochrane is an accomplished Professional Engineer with over 15 years of experience in leadership and project delivery. Marcie is ACEC-BC’s Project Leader as well as the President of Advance Principle Consulting. In 2019\, Marcie received the Chancellor’s Award for highest academic excellence from the Royal Roads School of Business and was nominated for the Governor General’s Gold Medal for Top Masters Level Student Thesis (2018) for her research on the retention of women in engineering. Her research\, in combination with her technical and leadership experience\, has led her to now work in roles that support engineering section organizations with equity\, diversity\, and inclusion initiatives. Marcie is passionate about leading others to take action and catalyzing change to improve diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.
