DESCRIPTION:Construction Risk Management\n\n\nJoin ACEC-BC’s Young Professionals Group on November 30th for a virtual event on “Construction Risk Management” with guest speakers: \n\nKeivan Rafie\, P.Eng\, M Sc.\, PMP ENV SP\, CDT\, PE (Australia)\, Deputy Regional Director\, Tunnels\, Hatch \nSairindhri Chakraborty\, M.Eng.\, B.Tech (Civil Engineering)\, Engineer in Training\, Tunnels\, Hatch \n\nConstruction risk management paves a way to evaluate and implement procedures to reduce the impact of risks in construction projects. The risk management process involves thorough planning to create a risk management plan that allows project managers to identify\, monitor and mitigate risks as they arise.  \nThis event explores construction risk management principles and examples from our guest’s experience in over 20 years of past projects. Although Financial\, schedule\, and design risks exist in all projects\, through careful consideration\, planning\, and management the risks can be mitigated\, and negative outcomes prevented. Keivan and Sairindhri will talk about the importance of identifying and managing risks in a project while highlighting the various categories of risks that a project can potentially encounter. Ruby comes from the Wandering Spirit bloodline\, one of Big Bears’ revered spiritual warriors. Big Bear was a signatory to Treaty No. 6 agreed to in 1876 in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Ruby’s leadership forges mutually successful relationships with Indigenous communities and Industry thereby utilizing best practices to successful Indigenous engagement and relationship building. She emphasizes inclusive and innovative collaboration\, authentic stakeholder engagement\, and the understanding of historical and cultural awareness as key factors in successful Indigenous Community Building and Economic Development.    \nRuby advocates to encourage Indigenous inclusion in all industries that impact the economy. “Shifts in social consciousness\, higher education and ethical practice is vital to sustainable development in our Indigenous communities in order alleviate the prevalent poverty.” \nEleanor Gill \nSocial and Engagement Specialist\, Hatch \nEleanor Gill has 15 years’ experience in community relations and stakeholder engagement\, Indigenous engagement\, social impact assessment and management\, local participation\, and cultural mediation. She has experience developing and leading stakeholder and Indigenous engagement plans\, social impact assessments\, and social impact management plans that meet international standards in stakeholder engagement and social performance set by the International Finance Corporation.  \nEleanor regularly works within engineering teams to integrate design\, engagement\, and permitting processes and outcomes\, and supports assessments of how engineering projects impact Indigenous lands\, resources\, rights\, and interests. Eleanor is currently involved with engagement and/or social performance aspects of MOTI’s Fraser Valley Highway 1 Project\, a confidential mining project in Saskatchewan\, and Sun Cable’s Australia-Asia PowerLink Project in Australia\, Indonesia\, and Singapore. Eleanor has developed Indigenous engagement strategies for mining\, energy\, and infrastructure projects. Eleanor has also developed local procurement\, employment and training strategies for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities\, including for the Eagle Mountain Pipeline Tunnel Project in BC and the Tlicho All Seasons Road Project in Northwest Territories. Eleanor has worked at Hatch for 14 years\, and during that time has been actively involved in establishing Hatch’s participation in the CCAB Progressive Aboriginal Relations program\, Hatch’s Indigenous Peoples Policy\, Hatch’s Indigenous Awareness Training program.’

His family was very involved with both of these communities and these connections remain important to him today. He is passionate about seeing Indigenous Peoples’ inclusion in all industries\, at all levels; he sees himself as much as an advocate as professional and supports multiple initiatives across the region and Canada. A graduate of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Victoria\, Kear completed a Master’s degree focused on Aboriginal Housing and Community Energy Use. Building upon the understanding of where we are currently\, the presentation will focus on inclusive leadership actions that young professionals can take to create more inclusive workplaces and environments. In 2019\, Marcie received the Chancellor’s Award for highest academic excellence from the Royal Roads School of Business and was nominated for the Governor General’s Gold Medal for Top Masters Level Student Thesis (2018) for her research on the retention of women in engineering. Her research\, in combination with her technical and leadership experience\, has led her to now work in roles that support engineering section organizations with equity\, diversity\, and inclusion initiatives. The goal of this presentation is to empower young professionals to enact positive change within their present sphere of influence and as future leaders in the industry. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker \nMarcie Cochrane is an accomplished Professional Engineer with over 15 years of experience in leadership and project delivery. Marcie is ACEC-BC’s Project Leader as well as the President of Advance Principle Consulting. In 2019\, Marcie received the Chancellor’s Award for highest academic excellence from the Royal Roads School of Business and was nominated for the Governor General’s Gold Medal for Top Masters Level Student Thesis (2018) for her research on the retention of women in engineering. Her research\, in combination with her technical and leadership experience\, has led her to now work in roles that support engineering section organizations with equity\, diversity\, and inclusion initiatives. Marcie is passionate about leading others to take action and catalyzing change to improve diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.

He has since lived in and visited parts of five different continents. He currently lives in Vancouver. In his formal education has learnt about water resources management\, geotechnical engineering\, the performance of geosynthetic liners in containment facilities\, among many other things\, but he got real engineering training at work through lab work\, fieldwork\, design exercises\, and project management experiences. He is passionate about educating young engineers\, volunteering\, and being out in nature for hiking\, biking\, kayaking etc. \nSamantha Taylor\, P.Eng – Geological Engineer at Hatch \nSam Taylor is a geological engineer (Queen’s University) with over six years of experience in the Dynamic Earth Solutions Practice at Hatch. She has worked in the geotechnical group in both the Niagara Falls and Vancouver offices and spent a lot of time on-site in the early years of her career. She acted as the lead geologist at the Keeyask Generation Station in Manitoba\, worked as a dam construction monitor at a major hydropower project in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and led and supported in a Quality Assurance/Quality Control role at a mine in northern Ontario. Sam has notable experience in dam safety\, geotechnical investigation programs\, and instrumentation and monitoring program\, design and is currently developing her rock mechanics skills. Sam calls the Rockies home\, loves to scramble\, and started her rock collection at an early age\, so her career path was no surprise! \nPia Abercromby\, P.Eng – Bridge Engineer at McElhanney \nPia Abercromby studied at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where she spent the first five years of her career designing large civil structures. Since moving to Vancouver in 2015\, she has been working as a Bridge Engineer at McElhanney. She has been involved in the design of bridges from 8 m long to 800 m long and has gained her professional engineering designation. When not at work\, Pia can be found in the wilderness skiing\, rock climbing\, hiking or trail running (or at the moment\, running around Vancouver). \n

As a Certified Passive House Designer with experience across multiple project types\, Scott is one of the part-time instructors at the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Passive House Tradesperson course where he endeavors to pass down practical knowledge on how to apply Passive House principles.
