SUMMARY:High-Performance Habits for Career Success
DESCRIPTION:About the Event \nThis virtual event will feature three presentations from panelists who will discuss the key habits that have helped them succeed in university and work. Following presentations\, we will have a Q&A session\, as well as small breakout rooms where students can network with young professionals. \nHow to Register \nClick here to register!\nWe are looking for young professionals to volunteer for the event. This will be a 1.5 hour time commitment\, and will include a 30 minute discussion on presentation topics\, networking with students\, and answering questions. No advance preparation is required. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering\, please contact Afzal Waseem: afzal.waseem@tetratech.com or Martina Riessner: martina.riessner@hatch.com. \nAbout the Speakers \nPrabeen Joshi\, Ph.D.\, P.Eng – Engineering Business Manager at Layfield Group \nPrabeen Joshi was born in Nepal and lived there for the first 25 years of his life until he decided to see the world\, learn languages and cultures. He has since lived in and visited parts of five different continents. He currently lives in Vancouver. In his formal education has learnt about water resources management\, geotechnical engineering\, the performance of geosynthetic liners in containment facilities\, among many other things\, but he got real engineering training at work through lab work\, fieldwork\, design exercises\, and project management experiences. He is passionate about educating young engineers\, volunteering\, and being out in nature for hiking\, biking\, kayaking etc. \nSamantha Taylor\, P.Eng – Geological Engineer at Hatch \nSam Taylor is a geological engineer (Queen’s University) with over six years of experience in the Dynamic Earth Solutions Practice at Hatch. She has worked in the geotechnical group in both the Niagara Falls and Vancouver offices and spent a lot of time on-site in the early years of her career. She acted as the lead geologist at the Keeyask Generation Station in Manitoba\, worked as a dam construction monitor at a major hydropower project in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and led and supported in a Quality Assurance/Quality Control role at a mine in northern Ontario. Sam has notable experience in dam safety\, geotechnical investigation programs\, and instrumentation and monitoring program\, design and is currently developing her rock mechanics skills. Sam calls the Rockies home\, loves to scramble\, and started her rock collection at an early age\, so her career path was no surprise! \nPia Abercromby\, P.Eng – Bridge Engineer at McElhanney \nPia Abercromby studied at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where she spent the first five years of her career designing large civil structures. Since moving to Vancouver in 2015\, she has been working as a Bridge Engineer at McElhanney. She has been involved in the design of bridges from 8 m long to 800 m long and has gained her professional engineering designation. When not at work\, Pia can be found in the wilderness skiing\, rock climbing\, hiking or trail running (or at the moment\, running around Vancouver). \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Interdisciplinary Coordination and Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, February 9 for presentations and networking sessions with interdisciplinary professionals\, hosted by ACEC-BC and SEABC.\n\n\nThe importance of interdisciplinary coordination and collaboration is key to running engineering projects smoothly and meeting your client’s expectations. This soft skill event demonstrates the need for interdisciplinary coordination and collaboration through our presenter’s experience in the building industry. The discussion is not aimed at technical knowhow but rather the key principals for all engineering disciplines to grasp the “big picture” of interdisciplinary projects. We hope to set the scene\, and provide some helpful tips\, for young professionals to further develop into well-rounded engineers. \nJoin us for three interesting presentations and a chance to network within the vast interdisciplinary engineering industry. \nCost: \n\nACEC-BC Member: $10\nNon-member: $25\n\nFormat: Zoom  \n– \nSpeakers:  \nMeagan Harvey\, P.Eng\, Structural Engineer\, Owner at Mercury Consulting Inc \nPreferred pronouns: she/her \nMeagan Harvey P.Eng. has more than 11 years of Structural Design experience and construction techniques. She is local to Kelowna\, BC and values community involvement. She has experience in residential construction including complete renovations\, new construction\, luxury homes\, and minor renovations. Her commercial experience also includes new construction of commercial buildings\, minor and major renovations\, tenant improvements\, and repairs to existing structures. Meagan also branches out into design of small bridges and utility structures. \nGraham Lovely\, P.Eng\, Electrical Engineer\, Partner at MCW Group of Companies and the Manager of the Airport Projects Group (APG) \nPreferred pronouns: he/him \nGraham is a Professional Electrical Engineer in BC. His technical role encompasses design of Electrical building systems while his management role involves driving continuous improvement in the business\, and developing team members through hands-on training and mentoring. As a testament to his exceptional efforts\, Graham was honored in 2018 with two Young Professional Awards in consulting engineering through ACEC (national) and ACEC-BC (provincial). \nScott Ghomeshi\, P.Eng\, Mechanical Engineer\, Associate at Integral Group \nPreferred pronouns: he/him \nAs an Associate with robust project and stakeholder management experience\, Scott has successfully delivered across various archetypes including Institutional\, Aviation\, Civic\, and Emergency Services. Scott’s passion and enthusiasm for sustainable built environments is evident as he strives to incorporate resilient and regenerative design strategies in all of his projects. With emphasis on integrated design\, he is able to collaborate effectively with project teams to explore and develop sustainable design solutions that meet and exceed the client’s triple bottom line. As a Certified Passive House Designer with experience across multiple project types\, Scott is one of the part-time instructors at the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Passive House Tradesperson course where he endeavors to pass down practical knowledge on how to apply Passive House principles.
