SUMMARY:Making Big Career Decisions and Learning From Failures
DESCRIPTION:Three or four panelists will give short presentations about their careers. A discussion will follow in which the panelists explore how to make big decisions and learning from failures. We will discuss times when each panel member has had to make a "Big Decision" in their career\, and how they evaluated their options. We will open the floor to questions from the audience for an interactive conversation. Lastly\, students will be divided into smaller discussion groups where they can network with young professionals. \nAbout the Speakers: \nArma Dhaliwal\, M.Eng.\, P.Eng\nArma Dhaliwal is a senior Pavements and Geotechnical Engineer with Tetra Tech. She graduated from UBC in 2007 and immediately started working for Tetra Tech. Her experience and interests are in transportation and infrastructure projects. She has worked in both of Tetra Tech’s Geotechnical and Pavements Groups and is now part of the Asset Management Group. While in the Geotechnical group she worked on transit\, utility and industrial energy projects. As part of the pavements and asset management groups she has been involved in projects that ranged in size from shopping center parking lots to provincial and interstate P3 projects with up to 30 year operation periods. \nAlex Wigle\, P.Eng\nAlex Wigle joined Hatch in June 2015 after completing his Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Alex works in Hatch’s metals sector with the High Pressure Metallurgy multidisciplinary team designing autoclave gold processing facilities to sustainably process refractory gold ore. He is currently working on the Amursk POX Hub Expansion project located in far eastern Russia where the world’s largest pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave was installed. Alex has also worked on gold projects in Colorado\, Chile and Papua New Guinea. \nPhilip Riessner\, P.Eng.\nPhilip Riessner graduated from the UBC Mechanical Engineering program in 2015\, and was hired out of school by PETRONAS Energy Canada Ltd. He completed a rotational EIT program with PETRONAS\, where he gained exposure to field operations\, asset integrity\, and production engineering. He have since assumed the position of Water Management Engineer\, where he oversee the sourcing and recycling of water in support of oil and gas development. \nThis is a virtual event and will take place over Zoom. \nWe are looking for young professionals to network with UBC students and help to answer their questions after the presentation. This is a 1.5-hour time commitment; the first hour will be listening to the presentations and panel discussion\, and the following half-hour will include actively discussing the topic\, networking with students and answering questions they may have about your own career. SUMMARY:High-Performance Habits for Career Success
DESCRIPTION:About the Event \nThis virtual event will feature three presentations from panelists who will discuss the key habits that have helped them succeed in university and work. Following presentations\, we will have a Q&A session\, as well as small breakout rooms where students can network with young professionals. \nHow to Register \nClick here to register! \nWe are looking for young professionals to volunteer for the event. This will be a 1.5 hour time commitment\, and will include a 30 minute discussion on presentation topics\, networking with students\, and answering questions. No advance preparation is required. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering\, please contact Afzal Waseem: afzal.waseem@tetratech.com or Martina Riessner: martina.riessner@hatch.com. \nAbout the Speakers \nPrabeen Joshi\, Ph.D.\, P.Eng – Engineering Business Manager at Layfield Group \nPrabeen Joshi was born in Nepal and lived there for the first 25 years of his life until he decided to see the world\, learn languages and cultures. He has since lived in and visited parts of five different continents. He currently lives in Vancouver. In his formal education has learnt about water resources management\, geotechnical engineering\, the performance of geosynthetic liners in containment facilities\, among many other things\, but he got real engineering training at work through lab work\, fieldwork\, design exercises\, and project management experiences. He is passionate about educating young engineers\, volunteering\, and being out in nature for hiking\, biking\, kayaking etc. \nSamantha Taylor\, P.Eng – Geological Engineer at Hatch \nSam Taylor is a geological engineer (Queen’s University) with over six years of experience in the Dynamic Earth Solutions Practice at Hatch. She has worked in the geotechnical group in both the Niagara Falls and Vancouver offices and spent a lot of time on-site in the early years of her career. She acted as the lead geologist at the Keeyask Generation Station in Manitoba\, worked as a dam construction monitor at a major hydropower project in Newfoundland and Labrador\, and led and supported in a Quality Assurance/Quality Control role at a mine in northern Ontario. Sam has notable experience in dam safety\, geotechnical investigation programs\, and instrumentation and monitoring program\, design and is currently developing her rock mechanics skills. Sam calls the Rockies home\, loves to scramble\, and started her rock collection at an early age\, so her career path was no surprise! \nPia Abercromby\, P.Eng – Bridge Engineer at McElhanney \nPia Abercromby studied at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where she spent the first five years of her career designing large civil structures. Since moving to Vancouver in 2015\, she has been working as a Bridge Engineer at McElhanney. She has been involved in the design of bridges from 8 m long to 800 m long and has gained her professional engineering designation. When not at work\, Pia can be found in the wilderness skiing\, rock climbing\, hiking or trail running (or at the moment\, running around Vancouver). \n
